He is, however, interested in working on a comedy with the Joker star.

Joaquin Phoenix is set to return as DC’s Joker in 2024’s Folie à Deux alongside Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, the second movie in the Todd Phillips-helmed story.

The first movie, Joker, was released in 2019 and was met with immense success at the box office.

However, despite its huge popularity and box office intake, the story might just be coming to an end with the release of the upcoming sequel.

You can watch the trailer for Joker: Folie á Deux below:
While talking to Variety about his upcoming Joker sequel, director Todd Phillips took the time to subtly confirm that Folie á Deux will be his final outing in the comic book movie world.

“It was fun to play in this sort of sandbox for two movies,” he told Variety.

He added: “But I think we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world.”

Although the director never specifically stated a third movie is off the cards, he has seemingly confirmed that he doesn’t have any interest in teaming up with Phoenix for a third instalment.

This most likely means a Joker 3 won’t be happening.

Phillips may not want to jump back into Gotham after Folie á Deux, however, he doesn’t have any plans to stop working with Phoenix on other potential projects.

“I’d love to keep working with Joaquin,” he revealed.

He added: “But on a comedy because he can be so loose and funny.”

“I think people really want comedies right now,” he added.

“The trailer for ‘Joker 2′ sort of sums things up when it says, ‘What the world needs now is love.’ But I would go further: We could use a good laugh too.”
