Actor Elliot Page recently reflected on his experiences with misgendering and his return to acting in the new film Close to You.

The actor who came out in 2020 shared that while he gets misgendered frequently, it doesn’t bother him unless it’s done with malicious intent.

In a recent conversation with The Guardian, Page said, “I get misgendered all the time, and I don’t care unless someone’s trying to, you know, be mean.”

In Close to You, Page portrays a trans man named Sam who returns to his hometown for his father’s birthday.

The actor mentioned that while he wouldn’t correct someone misgendering him in real life, his character Sam does so in the film.

Page said, “I want to be clear: I wouldn’t correct her as me. I’d be like, ‘It’s fine. We’re going to move on from the moment.

“It takes a second.’ But, you know, I’m not me. I’m Sam here. And that moment was so perfect because that’s what happens.”

Juno star also revealed that his own mother occasionally slips up with pronouns but he understands it takes time.

He added, “She’s pretty good. I’m like, ‘Of course, it’s going to take you a second, mom. It’s fine. You don’t need to beat yourself up about it!’”

Beyond discussing misgendering, Page also touched upon his current relationship status, expressing feelings of exhilaration about being single.

He reflected on his past relationships, admitting that he often entered them for “selfish” reasons and is now enjoying the freedom of being on his own.

Before his transition, Page was in a relationship with Samantha Thomas and was married to Emma Portner for two years

Close to You marks Page’s highly anticipated return to film since coming out as transgender.

The film explores themes of family, acceptance, and identity, with some parallels to Page’s own life experiences detailed in his memoir Pageboy.

Close to You premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2023, and was released in U.S. theatres on August 16, 2024, with a subsequent release in the UK on August 23, 2024.

It will also be available for streaming starting September 17, 2024.
